My family still jokingly call all my waffling on health and well-being ‘The Jenny Ella Wellness Project’!!! Well, here is another one:
Get lost in nature. Daily.
Alongside my daily yoga practice, another thing I do to bring about more calm and happiness in my life is get out in nature every day, even if it’s just for five minutes. I am lucky, I live by the sea in Cornwall but I also do this whenever I am teaching yoga in London (often!) or anywhere else.
I never look for it to be physical exercise. It’s just a stroll along a coastal path, daydreaming on a park bench, or a breath of fresh air as I walk round the block.
The way I see it is, if I get myself outside in nature once a day, then I start to appreciate natural beauty wherever I find it, whether that’s spotting a single wild flower in the pavement cracks, or an incredible sunset at the beach. When I put my attention on these good things, I start to notice other positive, life-affirming things…. and before I know it, this sets the tone for my day, my week, my life.
Mind and body only live in the present. They respond to what is directly in front of you. Your body and mind want to heal, want to be happy, want to be at ease. So if you can point yourself in the right direction, by directing your thoughts and energy towards something uplifting, the rest follows. It’s like one of those ‘join the dots’ puzzles you used to do as a kid. Gradually, all the little moments of peace and joy join up together and little by little your life becomes calmer, richer, happier. It is definitely working that way for me!
